Pause in Britain’s Telecom Industry Decisions Due to Forthcoming General Elections

Kip Meek, UK’s independent spectrum advisor, came down strongly on the government and local politicians who have been ignoring the spectrum issue for quite some time now. Analysing the current political situation Meek said that he did not feel that the government would be able to hold a spectrum auction in 2010. He said that politicians were to be blamed for this as they had been ignoring the digital switchover issue. He believed that the politicians did not care about the spectrum issue as it would not generate votes for them in the coming elections. Meek said that the issue had been left too long thereby bringing important decisions very close to the general elections.

Meek said that the auction was initially scheduled to happen in 2008, but was postponed due to disagreements and legal issues within the industry itself. The auctioning of spectrum would allow current operators to expand their services while improving their current 3G and broadband services through- out the country, stated Meek (click to compare mobile broadband). It would also give rise to next generation mobile broadband services, added the spectrum advisor who advised the politicians to look into the matter on a priority basis.

Meek said that the future was in television and mobile and these industries had a lot of scope for innovation. He advised that by nurturing these industries and providing them with the resources that they required, the UK would become a key competitor in the implementation of next generation mobile technology. He acknowledged the fact that this subject was an unclear and difficult subject to deal with, but urged politicians to look into it immediately so as to facilitate the growth of this industry.
