The Movie Industry: Selling Your Screenplay

The movie industry is one of the most difficult and competitive businesses to break into. The competition is fierce and unforgiving. A screenwriter needs more than just a great story, he or she also needs to be sure to follow the exact script formatting guidelines or the screenplay won’t even be seen, let alone read. Additionally, networking plays a big role in getting your screenplay read. Having a publisher or representation is significant in having the right people look at your work.

If you choose to go the independent route, instead of the mainstream-big-studio route, the journey of publishing your screenplay and getting it on to the big screen is also difficult. If you go that route, you face the challenges of funding your film. Networking will still play a big role, especially when seeking out investors or people who believe in your film project.

Writer, Diablo Cody won an Oscar for her film/ screenplay, “Juno.” Her previous publishing experience includes her book, Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper, published in 2005. The writer herself proved herself to be an unlikely success story. She is a one-time stripper and now she is an Oscar Award winning screenwriter.
